Coalition Against Environmental Racism

Sixth Annual Environmental Justice Conference
April 28 & 29th, 2000
University of Oregon
Speakers and Schedule
|
This free and open event on the University of Oregon campus will
focus this year
on creating a west coast environmental coalition.
Environmental Racism is a term we use to
refer to the disproportionate disposal and resource depletion in
communities occupied by populations of subjegated people, most
prevalently, people of color, undeveloped countries
and those who live in poverty. Environmental Justice is a grass
roots movement that has responded to environmental racism
by bringing
together resources
that give a voice to those who have little political power. The
unequal distribution of hazardous waste on Native American
Reservations, third world countries, those who live in poverty,
extortion of illegal labor and
communties of color is an example of how our oppressive system
prevents subjugated peoples from gaining access to
agencies of empowerment
CAER (The Coalition Against Environmental Racism) is a coalition of
students and people in the community dedicating to promoting the
environmental justice movement through education and
organization. By holding the Environmental Justice Conference we
provide a forum for education and networking to strengthen and/or create
coalitions to further the Environmental Justice movement.
The conference is coming together quickly, we still need help!
Meetings are at the Multicultural
Center in the EMU at 6:00pm on
Mondays.
For more information or to voice
concerns, contact one
of the
coordinators.
