In a society of constantly shifting values and
viewpoints, it has become increasingly
important to nurture an informed
citizenry to maintain an effective
democracy. An educated citizen must be aware of the
growing complexity of the governmental process and the issues that
confront our communities. the goal of Oregon Boys
state is to nurture that educational
process by placing an emphasis on direct participation.
It will be throughhands-on experience that you will learn
about many facets of our state including the local
government, legislature, judicial system, political
parties and your role as a citizen of this state.
Without participation from the citizens of the state in the governmental process,
the democratic system wold fail to exist
This principle is crucial to the success of the Boys State program. without your active
participation, the Boys State program would benfit nobody. Fortunately, this program
draws the best high school leaders in Oregon, hus ensuring that each person is ready to
give, and receive, one hundred percent of the individuals’ and the program’s potential.
You will find that Boys State is a constructive and flexible learning program set within an
atmosphere of friendship, diversity and challenge. In the end, its value is what you make
of it, and this is why it has remained such a strong and continually expanding program.
This handbook presents the basic structure of Oregon’s governmental structure as
modified for Boys State. By no means do these pages completely reflect the complexity of
our state system or of Oregon Boys State, but it should give you some idea of what to
expect duting your week’s involvement in the program. we encourage our questions and
that can by applied to the program.
