For IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2/23/02

During the past few weeks, there has been misinformation and misperception regarding the ASUO Programs Finance Committee.  We feel the need to address these concerns, and shed some light on recent decisions that have been made.

Myth: PFC has never done recalls before.

Fact: Every year, for at least the last 3 years, PFC has done recalls.  There was simply much more publicity this year than in the past.

Myth: A calculation error of $535,000 forced PFC to undertake recalls.

Fact: The calculation error did not affect PFC to the tune of $535,000.  Once the error was discovered, the Student Senate increased our benchmark to the allowed 80%, so as to allow for growth within programs. However, even without the error, PFC would have been forced to recall groups.

Myth: PFC programs are suffering because ballot measures were incorporated into the PFC budget this year.

Fact: PFC received special permission from the students during the fall special election to have an unusually high benchmark in order to accommodate the incorporation of the ballot measures. Also, PFC programs received a higher percentage and dollar amount of growth than the ballot measures.

Myth: PFC arbitrarily chose which budgets to recall.

Fact: There was a specific reason for recalling every budget, simply based upon numbers.

People have expressed a strong desire to know why each budget was recalled.  Here is a short justification for each budget recall.

*The following programs were recalled because they received substantial increases during their initial budget hearing:

Counseling Center

Campus Recycling

Asian Pacific American Law Student Association

Asian Pacific American Student Union

Coalition Against Environmental Racism

Hawaii Club

Interfraternity Council

Japanese Student Organization

LTD

Recreation Sports

Oregon Daily Emerald

Permias

Sexual Assault Support Services

Forensics

Programs and Assessments

Multi-Cultural Center

*The following groups were recalled because they had substantial rollover in previous year’s budgets:

Kultura Pilipinas

Malaysian Student Organization

MEChA

Minority Law Student Association

Native American Student Union

Associated Students for Historic Preservation

American Institute of Architecture Students

Black Law Student Association

*The following groups were recalled due to an increase given when there was no prior clear spending patterns in specific line items:

Ecological Design Center

Students of the Indian Sub-Continent

Women’s Center

*The following groups were recalled due to specific questions regarding spending:

Career Center

Oregon Marching Band

Oregon Marine Student Association

Student Insurgent
