This is the time that we all must dig in and increase our efforts to save our beautiful forests from destruction. Many of you know that WALL (Witnesses against Lawless Logging) is a people's group working toward organizing resistance againstlawless logging in the Northwest. It helps communities organize, providing nonviolent, civil disobedience trainings and facilitates communications between communities. Through its ACTION RESOURCE TEAM (ART), it helps communities organize statewide protests and rallies providing assistance in such areas as legal, media, negotiations, planning, outreach and logistics.
WALL is currently mounting a major outreach, grassroots campaign to substantially increase the resistance by mid-April when "Ancient Forest Week" is being organized to kick off the Spring offensive to derail the Salvage Rider. We envision a whole week of forest related events througout the state, and hopefully the nation which culminate in a major protest rally on April 20th.
We need you to circle that date and begin to help us make the protest a huge success with thousands of forest protects joining together from all over the region. We need you to start communicating and organizing. Contact the area WALL coordinator nearest you, or call our 800 number and volunteer. Details of the protest will be forthcoming over the next month.
WALL has made some important strides over the last month. We have an information hotline which is now an 800 number. We are on the Internet, we are establishing and expanding a database, and we are being assisted by Oregon Wildlife Federation.
Oregon Wildlife Federation is one of the oldest environmental organizations in Oregon. At its annual meeting in early February, the members voted to actively support WALL. This was a major breakthrough for us. It is now possible for our supporters to become members of Oregon Wildlife and your contributions will go directly to help WALL. Membership is $20 and is tax deductible. Please become a member of OWF as soon as possible. If you can contribute more..that's great, but please become a member.
We are working on a number of other initiatives which include a major poster campaign to be launched in early March. The poster campaign will have the theme of "Not One More Ancient Tree" and will be a visual centerpost for our community organizing.
Well, folks..that's it. We all know that is now or never. If we pull together, we can save forests, and if we don't..we won't. So let's get to work.
Thanks!! Joe Keating
