Deady Hall is the oldest building on campus. When its doors opened in 1876, students were required to bring a few pieces of wood to class for the stoves that heated the building. Men and women used separate staircases to prevent the women from flashing their ankles while climbing the stairs. In 1977, Deady Hall and neighboring Villard Hall, the second oldest building on campus, were designated National Historic landmarks. Today, Deady provides classroom and office space for the mathematics department and the staircases are officially coed.
