Objective
This web site was created by Angela Chiu. I am an undergraduate student at the University of Oregon in a psychology class entitled. “Mind and Brain” taught by Professor Jennifer Freyd. I hope that this web site can help you understand the importance of the genetic and environmental influences on intelligence.
General Ideas of This Web Sites:
According to Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, there are seven types of intelligence. Namely, they are musical, bodily/kinesthetic, spatial, linguistic/verbal, logical/mathematical, intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence. The kind of intelligence that predicts success in school is measured in IQ tests, which measure linguistic and mathematical abilities (Western, 2002). The existence of genetic influence on IQ is demonstrated in twin studies and adoption studies (Boomsma & Van Baal, 1998; Frydman & Lynn, 1989). Though environmental factor can change the inherited IQ; it will not increase or decrease dramatically. Two environmental factors that I researched on are domestic violence and malnourishment (Brown & Pollitt, 1996; Koenen, Moffitt, Caspi, Taylor, & Purcell, 2003).
