5. Next Meeting: Tuesday, July 6th 5 -7; then Tuesday July 13th - 5-7; then we’ll reschedule if a daytime becomes available (administrators will sometimes attend only first portion of the meeting)

Jessica: resources that support diversity and student services research the university organization and structure goals include: looking at existing infrastructure looking at need for staffing for MCC looking at need for vice pres-student affairs making admin more student-centered

Spencer: fundraising - for research institute; other initiatives
-will meet with Duncan
-sees two areas for focus
     l -strategies for fundriaisng to support student diversity initiatives
    1 - more farreaching - alumni -create materials to state the case;develop
-list of things alumni can fundraise for
-resource: Mia Tuan for Research Instittute (RI)
    would be both theory and practice in same building
-will check with Carla Gary
-outcomes might be 2 reports
     l - research - everywhere there is something similar to the research institute idea - reach conclusions about
        good things/bad things about the proposed theoreatical/practical institute
    1 - report of funding sources available - Mia Tuan has a list - e.g. grants that pay start-up costs of doing the
        reserach to find ##

-develop questions to ask each place

Jason: recruitment/retention of faculty/staff/students
objective: measurable impact on programs and policies in place; is broad
working with Carla Gary

2 formulate policies and recommendations:
R&R of more students: social and academic programs needed to keep students interested in being here -
social: more for returning students of color (cf OMA retreat for new) coalition building; a returning students retreat;
-will need budget; look for funding
-follow with event each month
-academic - honors program: doing research for professors; ways to draw students in - $ is there; need develop application process and awareness
-R&R of more faculty: Carla, John Moseley
-idea: 2 year visiting professorship - junior or post-doc faculty to UO, collaborative research with senior faculty
-need to find resources : for GTFs
-retention is harder: need build community; address pay issues; etc.
-staff: work with ASUO/Hong Tran, Ken Lehrman, Patty Lopez
-maybe a job satisfaction survey - maybe need intrinsic rewards system’

Huy: student diversity training and help with other projects
-need messages throughout whole transition: residence halls, IntroDUCKtion,
Week of Welcome, etc.
-messages should be present from the beginning -re being welcoming etc.
-pledge of respect can be used
-perhaps a video or movie
-more awareness of how we present this university
mentor: Larry Blake Jones, Troy, OMA, Patty Lopez :use ORIENTATION - get into their programs

Missy: coordinating intern

- looking at conferences
- MCC to be central location - support, work space
- need to assure dialogue among ourselves - so we can feel like a community
- some social events - potluck - mid-July, maybe barbeque, softball, etc. perhaps at the longhouse or a park
- future meeting(s) with deans, department heads -maybe a reception
- check with Carla or Robert Melnick re deans and follow-up
- need an end of summer or fall kick-off activity; perhaps a speaker like Tim Wise-
- objectives include: coalition building, community building, paper trail,
- notebook for archives, keeping track of everyone
- we should e-mail Missy about our contacts, work progress, resources,
- we should periodically update Steering Committee - a written report or email or ???
- some sort of report at the end on what has been accomplished

Kathleen - educational environment....reaching middle majority
-working on survey ideas with Tris O’Shaunessey
-mentor for ways to reach middle majority - perhaps Laura Blake Jones
-how to learn about them:
-how to reach them: what range/group are we trying to connect with
-maybe Gerry Burke, Racial Task Force, Larry Roper/OSU
-talk with Huy
-Bridge panel - LGBT group - as a strategy
-include women’s issues on this campus in concept of diversity
-also non-traditional in age

Jessie - affirming/sustaining diversity

Jennifer Rosen: diversity and our curiculum
-research on what other universities are doing - best ways to incorporate
-diversity into our curriculum
-one idea: course evaluations
-talking with Mia Tuan - some problems with demographics
-re-evaluation of what courses do and should count - perhaps with Rob Proudfoot
-Gerry Burke, David Frank - FAC resources, Carla Gary
-some good resources on internet: e.g. NYState -Buffalo - require courses on broad diversity issues

John Riordan - faculty diversity training faculty/staff/administration
-different programs for different staff - or just focus on faculty?

-reformmating our presentation to departments - make it dept based
-meet with whomever is around -as many as can
-get help from them in forming ideas; create ownership
-use new faculty orientation
-get door open to faculty for direct training across campus: new way to refer to it,
-not as "diversity training", but "facilitated dialogue"
-check web; use UO library diversity advisory group, stay in touch with FAC,
-Senate Executive, faculty who are interested (give him ideas)
