Summer Diversity Intern Update  8/19/99

Nathaniel Bachelder
I met yesterday with Dave and Anne to talk about moving the Pledge of Respect into the public sphere. This morning I met with Dave, Anne, Jen, Jason, and Tom from the University Communications department to talk about a website for campus diversity and other ways of making the work that is being done more visible to the public. Jason is going to work
closely with Tom on designing the website. We need to come up with a list of FAQ's to go on the website concerning campus issues of diversity so help!  =)
I also met with Gwen Tistadt this morning and talked about ideas for the video. She reminded me that I really need to know my target audience, and I believe my target audience is mostly faculty, staff, and administrators. I would like this video to be viewed by students, but feel that perhaps in the future another video could be developed that targets
students specifically.

This week I met with Joe Wade of Academic Advising and talked about students on probation and strategies for retaining undergrads.  It has become very clear that the key to R&R of underrepresented students lies in
better preparing them for college as early as possible in K-12.  I also attended Carla's Forum for Affirmative Action.  I am still trying to evaluate how that went.  I met Thursday with Hubin, Jen, Anne, Nathaniel, and Tom Hager on doing/creating a Diversity Website.  I was appointed to work with Tom on it.  I also had a meeting with Provost Mosely on R&R of Faculty.  Not much new stuff came out of it that I hadn't already heard from others.  Just evaluating how programs that are currently in place are doing seems to be a need. My last meeting was with Linda Liu of OMA, who
gave me some interesting recommendations from 1994, which seems to be closely related to what we are doing.  I'll show you all at our meeting today.

I met with Anne about the course evaluations and we got some really good ideas together.  We talked about getting a committee together to discuss changes (with a student rep on it).  The evaluation software has to be changed to include 2 more questions and what we're thinking is that since money is already being spent they might as well revamp the
entire thing.
We are going to use the business school's eval as a base and see what people think.  A new eval should be ready for testing by winter, with the help of a gtf.  Also we're proposing that a committee (GTF?) be set up to evaluate the results and do something with them.  We are each going to write up a proposal for Jack Rice by Mon. or Tues. I'm meeting with Karen Sprauge tomorrow about the pathways program to see if that could be one avenue of getting a "diversity" curriculum implemented.
Met with Dave, Anne, Tom Hagar, Jason and Nathaniel today about the web page.  The feedback seemed really positive and it looks like we will have a web page ASAP, with everyone's help of course. Finally I'm meeting with Gerry Berk in about an hour, so I'll let you all know what happens there.

I had to cancel all meetings for the last week to get out of town. I did have a chance to meet with Chris Demaske from the jschool mid last week and she is willing to work on whatever level to get the her class and possibly more profs from the jschool working on an exibit for "Bias Crimes Awareness Week", which is going to be the second or third week of winter term.  I got a local internet company "245" to donate any web page or glossy poster type things we may need for bias crimes educational purposes, so that will be done for fall/winter terms.  Some of my law school people are getting back into town this week, so i will see them later on probably friday or monday.  Otherwise, I would like more info on
the press release type stuff, maybe we can talk about it tomorrow.
