Long term goals
1) Initiate and continue the process of expanding the student
conduct
code to address hate speech/hate crimes that effect members of the
campus community.
2) Structure a "Bias Response Team" to respond effectively to
hate
speech/ hate crimes that effect members of the campus community.
3) Structure a "Bias Crimes Awareness Week" to take place with the
announcement of the BRT.
Short Term Goals
1) Conduct Code: In speaking with Lisa Frankel today, we came
up with
a tentative timeline for the proposed changes. September 1 will
be the
date that my proposal will be "more" finalized and then brought to
the
various members of the commitee, the law school, and community
organziations (along with the material packet that I have put together
with the stuff I've researched) in order to get as much input as
possible during the beggining through mid fall term. The committee
will meet mid to late fall term (yet undecided) and by then I will
have, hopefully, gotten the input and support needed to be ready for
the 90day process before having a public hearing. It is difficult
to
say what will happen from here. I think it is much wiser to not
push
the issue too quickly because this needs to be supported by the campus
community and I would not want to give off the impresion that that
a
"fast one" is being pulled. Lisa thinks that Fall 2000 is probably
going to be the better time frame but this really depends on how the
changes are recieved, etc. So I guess what I am saying is that
my
short term goal is to have a good working proposal september 1st and
then I will redefine my time line from there.
2) Bias Response Team
I will have a proposal done for Stephanie, Troy, etc put together
on
August 19th that can then be looked at by the various people involved
and then reviewed at the next steering committing meeting. I
am
looking at the month of september being partially dedicated to putting
together the new materials, web page, etc.
3) "Bias crimes awareness week": This is a bit up in the air because
I
am contacting the jschool and art school profs. to see if their fall
term classes can do a project which would send the date back to winter
term, which could work out well because all three projects could
conincide (hoping that their is support for the code changes).
My
short term goal is to have a definite answer by the professors in the
next week or so and then go ahead and structure around that.
