     Guitarrista Segundo Labrada invited us to a group rehearsal to experience and learn more about traditional Cuban Son music.
     There are many different kinds of music and dance in Cuba including salsa, rumba, mambo, and cha-cha-cha. Most of these styles are derived from son, a distinctly Afro-Cuban musical style played with claves, congas, maracas, guiro, mbira, cowbell, trés or cuattro, brass, woodwinds and guitar.


     "Musicians and artists are treated relatively well in Cuba. Cubans express their individualism through art, music, and sports. The culture here is so deep and so revered- your art reflects who you are and takes on more significance and respect in this environment as opposed to the commercialism that co-opts music in a materialistic (capitalist) setting."
