I never truly lived at Sixes but I visited a week or two at a time while I was living in Talent. The first time I went I hitch hiked by myself, walking in from the road to an empty cabin. While I waited 3 days for anyone to show up, I got a severe poison oak rash - when everyone arrived I had to be taken into Coos Bay to a doctor. Another trip I brought a saxophone, a hammer & a saw and spent days at the Eddie Mine pulling & straightening nails, making bookshelves, & jamming to the woods.
Having several people join their efforts to make a task go quickly appealed to everyone. Communal living was an idea that I first read about in the Whole Earth Catalog and like everything else in there it seemed like a good plan. Easy Access Ranch was the longest time I spent living with as many roommates as a house could hold. Whether it was gardening, building things, cutting firewood, or taking care of livestock we learned how to work well with others with a good esprit de'corps, making the work feel more like play.
