Thank you for taking a moment to look at the 2005 Pac 8 Intercollegiate hockey conference Champion and
2005 I-5 Cup Champion University of Oregon Ice Hockey Team.
With NCAA hockey limited on the west coast, the UO and ACHA can offer you a chance to
get a great college education and still play college hockey.  Here is a quick over view of the Hockey program.

Please note open try-outs will begin the weekend before fall term starts!

Quality and Experience:

Oregon Hockey is very competitive. Most of the players have been playing on the ice the majority of their lives. While recognized as club in financial and social standing at the Univ. of Oregon, Ice Hockey competes above the club expectations. Players have a variety of hockey backgrounds, all the way from house leagues to travel squads and through juniors. This is not a place to learn how to skate. Be prepared this is serious stuff... (see eligibility requirements)

General Information:  pdf version to share with family & friends HERE

In order to participate with Oregon Hockey you must be a full time student at the UO; this means taking 12 credits a term. Most players will take an average of 16 credits to insure timely graduation.  You can see the UO web page (www.uoregon.edu) for details about how to apply and other important school dates.

There is an open try-out during the first week of fall term. The try-out schedule includes 5 nights on ice and one night of dry-land testing. We expect all players to be in shape when they arrive; our web page has these guidelines.

Over the course of the season, Oregon plays around 30 games with at least half of these taking place in the Pac-8 Conference against traditional Pac-10 teams (League Info).  The season runs over the course of fall and winter terms with the Pac-8 Championships taking place in late February and the National Championships taking place in early March.  Oregon will be hosting the 2005-2006 Pac-8 Championships.

We currently have one dry land and two on ice practices a week. The practices occur in the evening to avoid class conflicts. Each weekend, the team has 2-3 games where home games take place at 7:30pm. The team will limit travel to 5 road trips per season on weekends that to do not interfere with midterms. No games or practices take place during finals weeks.

The team plays at a local rink, located at the Lane Fairgrounds that is less then 5 minutes from campus. Whether you live in the dorms, apartment, or house: don’t worry. We have our own locker room, locked at all times, at the rink that we leave our gear in all season.  A remodel of the locker room is in the near future. Players will carpool to and from the rink.

Because we are a Club Sport, scholarships are not given; players are required to pay their own dues. We do receive a base budget from the University, but the costs of the season are usually more. The season usually costs around $1,500 per player, which can go up or down depending on sponsorships and fan support.  This amount is also spread over the course of the season so players are not bombarded with school and hockey payments.  Players have to maintain and provide their own equipment, except uniforms. We require that all players have a black helmet and black pants.  In the future, the team hopes to gain enough support to purchase gear for the team.

Preparing for UO season: Training Center

Please contact us regarding  off-season preparation for both try-outs and the season. Preparation is key as the Ducks are on the ice anywhere from 4-6 times a week. We highly recommend reading Peter Twist's book, Complete Hockey Conditioning.

Sign up for Weight Training II, weights I if you have no experience.  If you are on the team, and have taken weights II, register for Sports Conditioning at the Casanova Center by Autzen Stadium.

We'll be happy to help you with your conditioning questions and in the future we will have a packet available to help set you along with your goals. Simply put, you should be on the ice a minimum of 2-3 times a week during the summer. You should also engage in dry-land training, including strength training.

For more information please contact Coach McCallum at twin_spring@hotmail.com  or Team coordinators at  hockey@gladstone.uoregon.edu with your questions.

THANK YOU AND WE HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU!
