June First!

"June 1st" has become a household word in Eugene. On the first day of June in 1997, 11 people staged a peaceful act of resistance to a "public/private" development and the cutting of 40 heritage trees cleared to make room for it. They were met with dozens of cans of OC (pepper) spray, tear gas, beatings, and criminal charges. The actions of the Eugene Police (E.P.D.) were condemned by Amnesty International as acts of Police brutality and torture. For many, June 1st became symbolic of the lengths to which the E.P.D. will go to protect the interests of the elite. Full Story...

The legendary bandit queen Phoolan Devi, a lower caste womyn from India, rose from poverty, rape and abuse to become a modern day bandit, personally avenging her honor and stealing from the rich while giving to the poor. Seen by some as nothing but a common criminal, she is heralded by countless others as a heroine, a modern day female Robin Hood who fought in the name of the poor lower castes of India while simultaneously fiercely advocating wimminıs rights. Heather and I keep smiles pasted on, as befitting random tourists who "have never seen a dairy before," though I doubt these conditions would make the average person smile. I hope my expressive face is not giving me away as the man chats about pounds of milk and heads of cattle and I watch the cows, udders prominent, being automatically let in and out of concrete-and-metal pens.
