Many of you read earlier emails from MEChA about the dire situation in the autonomous municipality of San Juan Copala, Oaxaca.
UPDATE:
This community of San Juan Copala declared itself autonomous in 2006. For this reason paramilitaries have blockaded the community and murdered more than 20 people since December of 2009, including human rights observers Bety Cariño y Jyri Jakkola. Bety and Jyri were in the previous caravan that attempted to reach San Juan Copala but were killed when they were ambushed by paramilitaries connected to the government. In addition, a leader of the autonomous municipality was murdered along with his wive after that. The world is now watching, as an estimated 700 gathered in a caravan starting from Mexico City, to Huajuapan de Leon Oaxaca, and is on it’s way to Copala.
According to one of the blogs (the spanish one), the government attempted to stop the caravan by asking all the caravaners for their profiles (informacion personal) and previously, UBISORT, the paramilitary group had made a call out to citizens to stop the caravan by blockading the intersection at 5 cruzs outside of Huajuapan de Leon. In Juxtlahuaca, the caravaners proceeded by foot and upon continuing, they were only guaranteed safety until the community of Santa Rosa. They have now passed through Santa Rosa and on well on their way to Aguasfrias, which is territory controlled by the paramilitary.
The Caravan, is scheduled to arrive in San Juan Copala at 9pm tonight. All eyes are on Copala as the caravan advances. This is a very dire situation that we need to stay updated on. News articles and links of blogs that are being updated with more information are below:
