Upcoming event!!

19 Feb

MEChA, Lasc/Ciscap, & CLLAS presents:

Victor Hugo Lopez

Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Time: 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Location: LLC North Room 125

Victor Hugo Lopez will speak about how the human rights situation in Mexican state of Chiapas has deteriorated rapidly in recent months. In the past months activists have been assassinated, campesinos have been summarily arrested as political prisoners, paramilitary groups have violently dispossessed indigenous communities of their collective lands, and the Human Rights Center itself has been the target of attacks both in the media and through the barrel of a gun.

Come hear Victor Hugo Lopez speak of this complex situation and the role of the Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center in promoting the indivisibility of human rights, respect for cultural diversity and the right of autonomous self-determination, integral justice as a prerequisite for peace, and the development of a culture of dialogue, tolerance, and reconciliation.

Raza Unida Youth Conference is coming up!!!

08 Feb

Dear Community Members and Faculty,

It is our pleasure to announce that M.E.Ch.A. de UO will be hosting the 6th annual Raza Unida Youth Conference (RUYC) on March 10, 2010. The RUYC is an all day event where we invite Latin@ high school students from Lane County and other parts of the State to come to the University of Oregon and participate in a day filled with workshops, Keynotes, a campus tour, conscious raising and the building of relationships and networks. This year we are expecting over 300 students to attend and participate in the conference.

M.E.Ch.A. (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) is a student organization that has been active on the University of Oregon Campus for more than thirty years. We strive to promote awareness on issues related to Latinos on campus and in the community. One of our primary goals is the recruitment and retention of Oregon’s Chican@ and Latin@ Students in higher education. M.E.Ch.A.’s intent is to ensure that Chican@ and Latin@ cultures and philosophies are being represented at the University of Oregon and in our surrounding communities.

The motto of Raza Unida Youth Conference is Educacion; El Derecho De La Raza! (Education; the Right of the People!). With this in mind, this year’s conference theme will be Haciendo Sueños Realidad; Passing of the DREAM Act (Making Dreams a Reality; Passing of the DREAM Act).

With this in mind we are asking and inviting community members, alumni, university students and faculty to present workshops during the RUYC, discussing topics such as culture, identity, gender, sexuality and education. We hope that both the students and you the presenter will gain a stronger sense of community, knowledge and will feel invested in the students’ lives and future education.

If you choose to participate as a workshop presenter, please let us know as soon as possible so we can make the necessary preparations. Multiple workshops are also welcomed and encouraged. Presenters are invited to stay for the duration of the conference and are welcomed to lunch. Attached is a Presenter’s Form that provides space to briefly describe your workshop and accommodations. Please return the form to us before the 18th of February. If you have any questions please contact Jairo Castañeda at jairo@uoreogon.edu. Thank you for your time, continued support and we look forward to seeing you on March 10, 2010.

Sincerely,
Jairo Castañeda
