Our Journey began with this......
In 1947, Ken and Victor Dougherty started the colony here at the University of Oregon. These two men were from Alpha Zeta chapter at Oregon State University.
When this chapter was founded, it was chartered with only ten strong men. The men that chartered Alpha Omega chapter were Lynn Bucklin, James Bullard, Robert Chapman, Donald Clark, Charles Crone, Howard Dempsey, Eldon Diehm, Kenneth Doherty, Victor Doherty, Edward Harris, Joch Jackson, Paul Lansdowne, Alfred Ruedy, and Gordon Schneider. They were initiated at Alpah Zeta in 1947.
After chartering December 6, 1947, Alpha Omega was the 48th chapter of Pi Kappa Phi.
Between 1947 and 1971, the chapter moved locations a total of six times.
Also during that time the average membership was about twenty-five to thirty men.
This chapter became inactive in 1961, however, they were back on campus in fall of 1962, and since it was such a short disbanment, the new members were allowed to keep the original charter.
During the late sixties fraternities fell on hard times due to student unrest drugs, and antifraternalism, and since there was such low participation the chapter closed in 1971.
Alpha Omega chapter remained inactive until November 7th 1979. Kevin Vorheis started work toward the reactivation of the chapter by calling Jack Stewart to find out how to bring Alpha Omega back to the University of Oregon. Kevin was joined by four others to form the nucleus of the fraternity. By December 1980, they had sixteen people. In 1982, the chapter closed again.
It was the end of January of 1997, when the first men from the national organization stepped on campus to relocate Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Omega Chapter at The University of Oregon.
Tom Atwood, John Jordan, and Matt Pena (Directors of Expansion) went to work securing rooms to meet in and the signs went up all over campus inviting the men of the university to step up and take charge of their own fraternity and create their own traditions, to become founding fathers. After contacting some two hundred men a rough group of twenty-five well rounded athletes and scholars came together with a singular goal in mind...To Be, Without a Doubt the BEST fraternity on campus here at the University of Oregon.
The chapter grew together and formed bonds of brotherhood and tradition while remembering the reason that we all came together, a higher education. Our chapter had to learn about time management and responsibility, to get projects organized and done.
Though, still very young at the university, we are enjoying good standing and have already earned the chapter of the month award for excellent achievement here at the U of O.
On May 29, 1998, twenty-four men were initiated into Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Omega chapter.
But the journey continues to build the stongest chapter on this campus. Leaders, Athletes, and Scholars are wanted to build character and a program of service to benefit us all. Do you have what it takes to be a Pi Kapp?
