How do I get Involved?

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

There's a whole jumble of opportunities for you to get involved in the Pocket. Whether you're interested in directing, designing, or acting, getting involved is simple!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACTING
If you're interested in acting in a Pocket production, keep your eye the bulletin boards in the "green room," located in the basement of Villard Hall and the Theatre Arts notice board on the first floor. Announcements are posted there regularly, particularly towards the beginning of each term as directors start gearing up for their productions.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESIGNING
Designing requires a slightly more complicated process. You have to be accepted as a designer by the director of a Pocket show, so you're first step will be to find out who's directing the show you want to design.

Next, contact that person directly or by notifying the Pocket Board in order to negotiate concepts and responsibilities.. Directors are always looking for good designers, so you're skill or desire to learn is almost certain to be well received.

If you're not familiar with people in the department, or need to find out who's directing which play, simply contact the Pocket Board.

***Lighting Designers*** - Note: In order to hang lights in the Pocket Theatre, it is first required that you are certified by University Theatre Professor Janet Rose for proficiency in technical and safety procudures. Please first contact a technical director if you plan to design and hang lights for a Pocket show.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTING
If you're interested in directing a Pocket Playhouse production, you'll need to apply to the Pocket Board during the quarter prior to your project. The application process is easy, but
you'll want to be thorough so that your project is not passed by in the screening process.

You can download the necessary Director's proposal in PDF format right here (right click, and select "save target as" from the menu), or pick one up from the aforementioned "green room" in Villard Hall.

Once your application has been completed and accepted by the board, you will have the opportunity to enter the Pocket lottery, where you will compete with other directors to determine the performance date of your production.

...Here's how it works:

* A Board member, who isn't applying to direct that term, handles the drawing.

* For every director whose proposal application has been accepted by the Board, one lottery slip will be placed in the bedpan of justice.

* Each lottery slip will be numbered.

* Each director draws a lottery slip out of the bedpan.

* The director who draws the lowest number gets first pick of the available production datess for the upcoming term.

* Those interested can share a directing slot in the lottery with any other creative genius or genii, perhaps presenting two plays with similar themes or concepts, etc., but the total running time must be under the 90 minute limit. In the lottery, each of you gets to draw a number. Then you choose your slot together based on the lowest number drawn amongst yourselves.

* If you don't get a spot in the lottery, no worries! In the next lottery your chances double. You'll get to draw twice the next term and if you still don't get it, you get to draw four
times in the next term's lottery. But wait, that's not all! If you still don’t get a slot, you'll draw eight, that's right, eight times in the next lottery. If you still don't get a Pocket production
slot...damn, dude...we'll probably just give you one.

Once the Pocket season has been set you'll receive a Director's packet. While your Liaison is there to answer your questions, point you in the right direction, or just to soundboard
ideas off of, you can ask any member of the Pocket Board about any questions, quirks, or k'vetches that sit up and take notice of you while you're preparing your Pocket Playhouse hit.

...Some helpful hints for your proposal

Your completed Director's Proposal should include:

-One unmarked copy of the final edit of the script to be kept by the board.

-A rough set design.

-A list of props.

-A list of costumes.

-Your lighting needs.

-The size of your cast.

-Any other information about your production needs.

If it's not an original script, we'll also need:

-The name of the producing agent (like Dramatists Play Service or Samuel French), and the amount of royalties we'll have to pay.

Turn in your director's proposal application to the mailbox in Room 216 Villard Hall or a member of the Pocket Board by 5pm on the posted deadline. Proposal deadlines can be found in the news section of the site or posted in the "green room."

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST

When the Pocket Board reviews your application, we'll ask ourselves these five questions:

1. How difficult is it technically?
2. How long is it?
3. How complete is the proposal application?
4. How much space does it require?
5. How much will it cost? (Remember we can't accept scripts that run more than 90 minutes, be sure you've made cuts to your script before turning it in with your application.)

**Don't miss the deadline! We won't accept late proposal applications. No Exceptions.

**If you make any changes to your project after you've turned in your Director's Proposal application you must get it approved by the Pocket Board.
