Listen up for the PSA that is playing on UO's campus radio, 88.1 FM that was made by fellow vegan and SETA member "Tim in the Morning" Tim Sutton - player of the lounge tunes - in support of educating students where they can get cage-free eggs on campus and why they should buy them.

The wikipedia article on veganism is pretty cool and full of a bunch of info. I hadn't previously known the origins of the word vegan til i read it.

GET INVOLVED

  • Make a powerful difference with your lifestyle choices. See Why Vegan for up to date information on compassionate living.

  • Go to The Animal Rights Resource Site and sign some on-line animal rights petitions.

  • Write Letters
      General Animal Research

      Write to:
      · Secretary Donna Shalala, Department of Health and Human Services, 200 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20201.
      · Your Representative, House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515 and Senators, U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510.
Tell them that you feel the work being done on the validation of non-animal alternatives by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Science is very important and funding should be maintained at current or higher levels. (Currently, the project is grossly underfunded and they are the only government agency that actually has a mandate to validate alternatives to animal experiments.)

      Product Testing

      Write to:
1 Office of the Commissioner, Food & Drug Administration, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857. Ask the Commissioner to accelerate FDA efforts to develop, validate and accept humane alternatives and to actively discourage animal-based testing by manufacturers of cosmetics and personal care products.
      2. Office of the Director, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 2 rue Andre-Pascal, F 75775 Paris Cedex 16 France. Ask the OCED to replace all current international requirements for animal testing of cosmetics and personal care products with available, humane alternatives.
      3. Boycott the companies that still use animal testing. Send them a letter telling them that you will not use their products until they stop testing on animals.

      Environmental Toxicity Testing

      Write to:
      1. Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency, 401 "M" Street, SW, Washington, DC 20460. Ask the EPA to end its reliance on outdated and questionable animal toxicity tests and to accelerate its program to develop alternative methods and to use those which already exist. Also ask the EPA to place greater emphasis on the promotion of non-toxic pest control and agricultural methods.

      Class B-Dealers

      Write to:
      · Your Representative, House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515 and Senators, U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510.
      · Secretary of Agriculture, USDA, 14th St. & Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC 20250.
Ask that they draft and/or support legislation that outlaws Class B dealers that buy and sell cats and dogs.
