Next Meeting: Wednesday the 17th of May
Our next general meeting is this coming Wedneday at 7pm in the bottom floor of the EMU near the Women's Center, the Craft Center, and the Survival Center (same place for those of you who have come before). We will be discussing our plans for the cage-free campaign including tabling and flyering as well as organizing a bake sale. Additionally we will be speaking about passing on leadership positions. Perhaps you'd be interested in heading up SETA next year? In the meanwhile please check out these 6 bullets on how you can help build some momentum in this campaign as the end of the term approaches: 1. Write a polite letter to Food Services Director Tom Driscoll in support of UO going cage-free (email him at driscoll@uoregon.edu ) and make sure to CC seta at seta@uoregon.edu so we have a copy 2. Write a supportive email to the editor of the following local media: letters@dailyemerald.com and letters@eugeneweekly.com 3. If you live in the dorms, ask your R.A. to vote for the Residence Hall Association to collectively support buying cage-free eggs. 4. Go to the campus dining halls and fill out feedback forms saying you will only buy cage-free eggs and you want UO to switch. 5. Avoid buying any eggs or food containing eggs from dining halls or through university catering until they have switched to cage-free. 6. Make a personal pledge to stop buying battery-cage eggs in your personal shopping and dining. There are egg substitutes for when you are baking, such as using a small mashed banana or 1/4 cup applesauce per egg.

Taurine from bulls nuts?
If you are a vegan who, like me, sometimes consumes the energy drinks that are so popular among my age group and are unsettled by the rumors about taurine being from animal sources, fear no more. For Red Bull, at least. I decided to look into the truth of this rumor, and as far as I had to look was the FAQ on redbull.com they gave me the following information:
"Red Bull Energy Drink does not contain any animal products or substances derived from animals. The taurine in Red Bull Energy Drink is purely a synthetic substance produced by pharmaceutical companies and is not derived from animals or animal materials."
So there you have it, Red Bull is vegan, and it is left to be assumed that the taurine in other energy drinks probably comes from the same nonanimal sources. the straight-edge-ness of the drinks, however, remains to be determined.

Budget Hearing
SETA’s budget hearing is scheduled for this month. This is a very important hearing where we briefly meet with the Public Finance Committee to secure our budget for next year. Considering SETA’s up and down activity level over the past couple of years we have a lot to defend and need people power to do so. The more people we can get to show at this hearing the more seriously our request will be taken. The budget request this year asked for a minor increase from around $850 to $1000.When: Jan. 24th @ 9:30pmWhere: Alsea River Room (located on the main floor of EMU. Walk towards the information office and go down the hall located next to the info office. The Alsea River Room is down that hall on the left)
