This comes from my friend Stacie who is wintering at McMurdo Station.
Yep, you guessed it, I did it AGAIN!! The 1996 Sunrise Polar Plunge was
a smashing success and the best one of the year all due to the brilliant
young and talented mind of spOre (Nancy's sexy boyfriend)! First of all,
the weather was beautiful, (we were all warned that this plunge was the
toughest because it is approaching spring time when mother nature is her
angriest down here), no wind, probably around -10 F or somewhere around
there, and clear skies. BUT, the topper of the event were the hot tubs
that Spore put together with these big white bins (can fit up to four
people pretty comfortabley and there were about 5 or 6 of the bins) with
a hot seat put in each one run by generators to heat them up to a near
maximum of 160 F. (Probably could get hotter, but then we would
definately be soup!)
Series of events: get undressed in Kiwi Wonagan, run to hot tub with
blanket around you, jump in hot tub, sit, relax, don't think about the
cold water you are going to subject yourself too, then get out run down
to the hole, jump in, jump out, run back, jump in hot tub, and STAY!!
This can be varied, by jumping in and out as often as you like, but me, I
only did it once, just enough to get my patch to say I have done all
three of them this winter!
Other news, winfly flights start this coming Tuesday and will continue
through until Saturday. We are getting around 140 new faces, which is
exciting, but also a little depressing knowing that the year is coming to
a rapid end. It all went so very fast. Other than that, it is still
cold, dark and isolated, so on that note............
Adios amigos!
